A Bell for Bezaha

When Synod representatives visited Madagascar in 2000, they heard a request from a church whose bell was broke.  Arrangements were made and a bell was shipped in 2001.  The revolution broke out with the bell in a warehouse in Tulear.  In early 2003, a warehouse worker asked Stan Quanbeck, “what do you want me to with the bell?”  Arrangements were made and the parishioners had the bell installed in a few weeks.  The thank you letter from the church is:

To St. Timothy Lutheran Church: Beloved Family in the Lord!

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be among you always, amen!

Re: Thanks from the Malagasy Lutheran Church in Bezaha

The Bell, which .you sent us as a gift, arrived safely here and was received by us in the Lutheran Church at Bezaha. And so the whole congregation is very happy and truly appreciative. Therefore:

  • We offer thanks to you our sister congregation that gave us this gift, a very important piece of the church structure because it will be an important inheritance for many generations.
  • Also we offer thanks to Pastor Kevin Ogilvie, the general director of MELCAM, who was the "shovel had and the metal seen" and researched the way to respond to our thirst and the request that we made.
  • And so here, with this letter, we send the picture of the bell along with the Christians (the picture was taken after worship).
  • May the God of peace recompense you for all that you have spent on us.

So we say good-bye in the name of Him who loves us, Jesus the Lord.
